This review is far too in depth for me! You need to dial it back on here a little deniro, you just come on way too strong!!

Seriously though, besides a handful of legendary performances like 2/18, 4/29 or 7/2, I personally find 1971 to be rather overrated. It's not nearly as compelling to me as the high-energy psychedelic excursions of '67-'70, or the jazzy, cosmic marathon performances of '72-'74.

That said, I strongly prefer the fall of '71, when Keith joined the band - some great shows there. And the 10/31/71 Dark Star is, IMHO, a top 5 all-time version of that song...

Dont forget that ride starts with truckin and doesn't stop till the sugar mag. I have not stopped listening to that bonus disc. The sound is incredible and the country guitar twang thing. plus The Other One that Other One does it for me everytime. Space travel to Wildwest again.

Totally agree. For a transition year, '71 chock full of legendary shows.

Here's a non-comprehensive list of great '71 performances:

2/18/71, 4/14/71, 4/15/71, 4/28/71, 4/29/71, 8/6/71, 8/14/71, 10/31/71, 11/14/71, 11/15/71, 12/1/71, 12/4/71, 12/5/71, 12/6/71, 12/15/71, 12/31/71

I'm surprised to see 4/14, 4/15 on your list. I don't consider those to be particularly strong performances, and certainly not among the better shows of 1971. Personally, I think 4/12 is a much better performance, in spite of the cuts.

I'd certainly add 7/2 and 11/7, two of the very best from 1971. The list would still not be comprehensive...

4/12 is also a great show. I've never been a big fan of 7/2, the Fillmore West closing show, but perhaps I should give it another listen.

You're definitely not the only one who's less impressed with 7/2/71, but I consider it to be a monumental performance and some others agree (including William Tell). Several dynamite renditions, in my opinion, and one of the best performances of Cryptical> Other One of 1971.

Definitely agree about this show, esp. the Other One - what a monster!

Yeah, yeah, TMNS didn't show up until '75 but I was trying to be clever with the Subject line so bite me.

Have to chime in on the 8/14/71 show. One of the best Lovelight's out there.

How come no love for 11/6/71 and 11/7/71?

12/9/71 is probably my favorite version of Jack Straw (this week anyway)

Well, I did mention that the list was non-comprehensive. Those are fine shows though -- especially 11/7 - wow.

Not a great vintage for the Bordelaise either, but some superb Calvedos was made in 1971.

But I do like 1971 Grateful Dead!!!

I need to take Oenology lessons from you. The depth of my wine knowledge is somewhere between shallow and wading.

Looking forward to getting together with you again Rick. I'm heading back to Long Island on Saturday and planning on getting back down to OBX after Thanksgiving weekend.

And I'm now officially a member of the Herd. I'm going to to see Donna the Buffalo in NYC on 11/25.

The Heavy Pets just booked a show in Norfolk - about 20 minutes away at the Jewish Mother Backstage (backside of the NORVA Theater). 12/10 I think.

I think Charlie Miller is still doing their sound - that would be a fun get together.

Crap....

I was just informed by Mrs. Mando that I will be busy on 12/10.

She had "that" look and used "that" tone, so there is no hope of negotiating my way out of whatever it is she has in store.

Now I have to try and figure out what is going on on 12/10 that I forgot about.

The Northern California 71 Ridge Cabernat Sauvignon Montebello placed 5th at the 76 Paris tastings. It helped change the way people view wine around the world. http://www.cask23.com/history/parisTasting/
But I am more of an ale drinker hard to find a good porter in a bottle though. Here is concrete evidence that 71 is the best http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g92S5eZ0StQ
furthur evidence http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9vihYeWip4g&;feature=related. That should explain it.

Awesome read. Its amazing where a typo can lead. I deleted part of the subject box by mistake and chose not to go back and look it up. Expanded my knowledge of vino and get to hear more 71 in the process. Gotta love this place. Thanks all.
